A PARTIAL REGISTER DESCENDANTS OF C . Anthony Day OF GLOUCESTER, MASS., WHO DIED IN THE EEAR /joy. FI TCHBURC : PRINTED i;V I'HE SENTINEL PRINTING COMPANY. 1879. i ^i I s i FAMILY REGISTER; All records and traditions agree in this fact, that the Day family originated in Wales. In a book of Heraldry containing the arms of William Day, B. D., Provost of Eton College and Dean of Windsor, confirmed by William Flower, Norroy, on the 21st of October, 1582, in the twenty-fourth year of the reign of Queen FIlizabeth, he is said to be — ‘descended from the Dees of Wales, viz., being younger son of Richard Day, who was the son of Nicholas Day, the son of John Dee, (called by the English Daye), he was the son of Morgan Dee, younger brother to Richard Dee, Welsh- man.” • Dee is said to mean — “dark,” “dingy,” and is the name of a river in Wales ; along whose banks probably our ancestors lived and were call- ed by the name of the river to distinguish them from others. In the changes of language — Dee — came to be written — Daye. Next the final € was dropt, and we have its present form Day. Within the first thirty years after the settlement of New England, eight persons of the name of Day are found upon record ; while several years after, two others of the name appear. I. Robert, first of Cambridge, Mass., then of Hartford, Conn., who arrived in 1634. His descendants in the ninth generation numbered about 2420 males. They have principally centred around Springfield, Mass, and Hartford, Conn. H. Robert, of Ipswich, Mass., who arrived in 1635. III. Nathaniel, of Ipswich, Mass., who arrived in 1637. IV. Stephen, of Cambridge, Mass., who is thought to have been the first printer of this country. He died Dec. 22, 1668, aged 58. V. Wentworth, of Boston, Mass. 4 . Vi. Ralph, of Dedham, Mass. His descentlants are found in Wren- tham and Attleborough, Mass, and Killingly, Conn. VII. Matthew, of Cambridge, Mass. A single man. t VIII. Anthony, of Gloucester, Mass. The above facts are taken, almost verbatim, from a Genealogical Register of the ilescendants of Robert Day, compiled by Geo. IC. Day, and t)ublished at Northampton, Mass., 1848. 'Hianks are due Mr. (iidcon Day of Ham[)den, Mass., for the use of that Register, also to Prof. Geo. IT Day of New Haven, Conn., for valuable data. I have found it extremely dithcult to secure as full data of our fam- ily, especially the first five generations, as I have desired. But I have done the best I could with my limited means and abundance of pastoral duties. A future edition will be found fuller in details. 'Phe numbering of each family commences with a decimal ; thus gix'ing a better chance for additions, and more quickly showing the num- ber of children in a given family. According to the usual custom I find it convenient to use a few ab- breviations— *-dead ; b.-born ; m.--married ; d.-died. I have tried to have every date as accurate as possible and yet un- doubtedly some mistakes will be found ; if those, who note them, will drop me a line giving the correction, it will be very thankfully received. In this edition I have departed from the usual custom in such records and followed out both the male and female branches. It has of course made more work and expense, still I thought it might be interesting to have one edition thus compiled. It will be noticed that numbers are only given to children in the male descent.
