Letterbook, LM-306
This letterbook covers the period September 1891-November 1892. Most of the correspondence is by Alfred O, Tate and Thomas Maguire. Many of the letters are addressed to James W. Gladstone. The letters deal mainly with the marketing of the Edison-Lalande primary battery for use with the telegraph and phonograph. Included are items pertaining to advertising methods; the distribution of batteries through the regional supply houses of the Edison General Electric Co.; technical improvements that increased the cost of batteries; Edison’s supervision of the company’s orders, shipments, and accounts; and agencies in foreign countries. There is also some non-company correspondence, signed by Tate as Edison’s private secretary, similar to the material found in the General Letterbooks. The front cover is labeled "Battery Letter Book of the Edison Manufacturing Co., Orange N.J. 1891-1892." The spine is stamped "Letters." The book contains 698 numbered pages and an index. Pages 369-698 are blank. Approximately 20 percent of the letters have been filmed.

Dear Sir}+
I beg to ‘acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 14th instant, enclosing trial balance sheet of the Edison Mf. Co. for’ Octobor ist, also billo against the Edison Gen'l. Electric Co,, Toronso, certified to by you as being correct, and letter from Mr. Gladstone in regard to’ sendimy weekly reports to the Laboratory, each of which has had my attention.
' In regard to the matter of Manufacturing Company reports being sent weekly to the Laboratary, you gay in your letter: "You certainly could never have told him (Gladstone) that you wanted these for the purpose of shoring them to Mr. Edison. # In this cormection I wuld most respectfully request that you read the attached copy ofa communication which was forwarded to Mra Gladstone on July 22nd. You will find that in this Mr. Gladstone was most specifically informed that the reports were for submission to Mre Edisone The subject was again referred to in my letter of August 4th, 1891, copy of vhich is-also attached. If after reading this correspondence you still remain of the opinion that-the matter was not explained properly to Mre Gladstone, I will have nothing further to say on the subject. When-I first called Mr. Gladstone 'p attention to the fact that weekly reports were not being recoived at the Labcratory( and I did s0 inmediately the first week thoy were omitted) he informed m tnat they were being forwarded to you in New York; and although he did not say so in as many words his whole conversation and tone certainly, implied that he considered ths forwarding of duplicates to the Laboratory a work of superero- gation ad that in requesting it I was exceeding my authority. In subsequent telephone conversations with him on this subject (and they were numerous) I got the impression from vhat he told me that you knew the reports were not being received at the Laboratory,. and that it was all right. I telephoned Mr. Gladstone abgut this matter repeatedly, and if he says he had not a proper understanding of it,-well, he mist mve a very treacherous memory,to say the least. Mr. Gladstone seems to take refuge in the statement that he never reccived instructions to make weekly reports in duplicate , ard that he always sent weekly ‘reports to you at the Laboratory
until you removed your office to Now York. You have been going to
